Mentoring courseHow to run a conversation that helps
In a good mentoring conversation the young person talks more than you do. This course teaches you how to run it so that happens.
Who it is for
Adults who accompany teenagers or university students. theMark mentors receive it when they are given the role.
Rhythm
Eight sessions, at your own pace. Each one brings its deck and a guide that walks you through it. Nobody teaches it: it is self-study.
When they finish
Diploma on completing the course.
What you take away
1You know how to structure the conversation. The MEJORA method puts it in three stages —connect, converse and close—: you know where to start and how to finish.
2You learn to ask open questions. And the skills that hold them up: active and empathetic listening, and language.
3The other person becomes the protagonist. It is not about them accepting your answers, but about them finding their own: you steer, they decide.
How it works
There is no class: you set the pace. Each session brings its deck with the content and a guide that takes you through it. You can do the whole thing in a few evenings or spread it across the year.
The eight sessions: Introduction to Mentoring · The MEJORA Method · Connect · Converse I · Converse II and Close · The Mentor · Listening · Language
What it asks of you
Time and honesty with yourself. Nobody is marking you — what you work on here you use afterwards with a real person.
Its thesis is in the first session: the more the mentor listens and the more the young person talks, the more powerful the conversation. And its rule for starting out: trust is the antidote to fear.
